Gov Kefas’s Free Education Policy Will Yield Lasting Legacies- NUT Chairman

 

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Taraba State Wing, Comrade Nathan Solomon, has called on the people of the state to lend their support to Governor Agbu Kefas's Free Education Policy, emphasizing that the initiative, if supported, will have lasting positive impacts on the state's educational landscape.

In a recent interview, Comrade Solomon explained that Governor Kefas's education reforms, particularly the removal of school fees for secondary school students, have already made a significant difference for many parents and guardians in Taraba State. The policy also includes provisions for the distribution of essential school supplies such as bags, books, and sandals for students, which are further reducing the financial burden on families.

"This policy cannot be run in a fire brigade fashion; it will take time to fully take shape," Solomon stated, underscoring the need for sustained support from all stakeholders. "But I am confident that with the right backing, this initiative will leave behind a legacy of improved access to quality education for all children in Taraba State."

The NUT Chairman also expressed gratitude to Governor Kefas for his commitment to the welfare of teachers in the state. Solomon highlighted that the timely payment of teachers' salaries and wages is one of the significant steps the Governor has taken to uplift the education sector. "The leadership of the NUT in Taraba appreciates the Governor for prioritizing the needs of teachers, particularly with the implementation of the new N30,000 minimum wage. Before Governor Kefas assumed office, our teachers were often neglected. His approach shows a clear commitment to improving the welfare of educators," Solomon remarked.

In addition to supporting teachers financially, Comrade Solomon noted that the Governor has also overseen important infrastructural developments, including the parameter fencing of schools to improve security.

Commenting on the importance of teacher accountability, the NUT Chairman revealed that the union is actively involved in the monitoring of teacher performance. The NUT is part of a monitoring team set up by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, which has already visited schools across the three Senatorial Zones of Taraba State to ensure that teachers are fulfilling their duties.

Solomon warned teachers against truancy and absenteeism, stressing that those found guilty would face disciplinary action. "The success of this policy is not just about the Governor; it's for the people of Taraba State and the larger society. Education is the key to a brighter future, and we must ensure that teachers are fulfilling their roles to guarantee that our students receive the best education possible," he stated.

He further emphasized that the success of the Free Education Policy would not only benefit students but would also contribute to the overall development of the state and nation. "Once our students are educated, they will be better equipped for the future, whether that means further education or employment. That's why we, as teachers and the NUT, fully support Governor Kefas's efforts to make education free and accessible in Taraba State."
