Taraba State Gets First Family Court in Northeast As First Lady Calls for Speedy Justice in SGBV Cases

 

In a landmark judicial development, Taraba State has established the first Family Court in the Northeast, following the designation of Court Nine of the State High Court for the trial of family-related cases.

The announcement was made by Justice Silas Agya, the Chief Judge of Taraba State, during an advocacy visit by Mrs. Agyin Kefas, Wife of the Governor, in Jalingo.

Justice Agya stated that the Family Court will have jurisdiction over divorce cases, child abuse, neglect, delinquency, and other domestic matters, emphasizing its role in protecting the best interests of children.

He highlighted the rising cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), noting that 30% of girls and women aged 15 to 49 in Nigeria have experienced some form of sexual abuse.

He reaffirmed that Taraba State has domesticated the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, which serves as the legal framework for addressing gender-based violence and child protection issues.

The Chief Judge also outlined key judicial reforms, including the establishment of e-proceedings and e-filing systems, the creation of a Small Claims Court, and the renovation of court facilities and judges' residences to enhance judicial efficiency.

 Mrs. Agyin Kefas, in her address, called on the judiciary to ensure the speedy trial of offenders of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). She expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of child rights abuses and domestic violence, urging swift legal action to curb the menace.

The First Lady assured the judiciary of her commitment to working collaboratively to address these challenges, stressing the importance of ensuring justice for vulnerable individuals. She also commended the judiciary for its dedication to effective justice delivery in the state.

With this development, Taraba State sets a judicial precedent in the Northeast, leading the way in the protection of family rights, child welfare, and gender-based justice.
