Politics Without Humanity—Leave Taraba Deputy Governor Alone

The unfolding political drama surrounding Taraba State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Alkali, is a disturbing reflection of how far some politicians are willing to go in their quest for power. While the deputy governor battles for his health, certain individuals are battling for his seat—a move that is not only unethical but also inhumane.

For over 90 days, Alhaji Aminu Alkali has been absent from public duty due to medical reasons, receiving treatment in Germany with the full backing of Governor Agbu Kefas. Rather than allowing him to focus on his recovery, some desperate political actors are already scheming to take over his position, even when no official medical report has declared him unfit to continue in office. This is opportunism at its worst, and it must be resisted by all well-meaning Tarabans.

It is true that governance must not suffer, and the concerns of the people should not be ignored. However, forcing out an elected official on the basis of health without due process is both unjust and unconstitutional. Section 189 of the 1999 Constitution provides a legal framework for addressing cases of incapacitation, but it should not be manipulated to serve selfish interests.

While we acknowledge the need for transparency, we urge the state government and the deputy governor's family to provide a clear and honest update on his health. The public deserves to know the truth about their leaders, and such information will help dispel rumors and prevent political vultures from exploiting the situation.

Alhaji Aminu Alkali is widely respected as a loyal, competent, and result-driven leader. He has worked tirelessly with Governor Agbu Kefas to foster peace, development, and good governance in Taraba State. It is outrageous that those who should be praying for his recovery are instead plotting his removal. If his health condition truly makes it impossible for him to continue in office, the decision to step down should be his own, not one forced upon him by political opportunists.

Taraba State must rise above dirty politics and allow justice, fairness, and humanity to prevail. Those seeking to stampede the deputy governor out of office should rethink their actions and put the interests of the state above selfish ambition. Taraba's democracy must not be reduced to a ruthless scramble for power at the expense of human dignity.
