20-Year-Old Abandons Newborn Baby in ATC

The District Head of Kofai ATC, Barik Augustine Njenmang, has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of abandoned newborn babies in the area.

Our correspondent reports that a newborn baby girl was abandoned by a 20-year-old mother at Early Childhood Academy in the early hours of Monday, February 24, 2025. The baby was discovered by Victoria Patrick, a school cleaner, who initially hesitated to touch the wrapped cloth she found on the floor but later mustered the courage to check its contents. To her shock, she found a baby wrapped inside.

Authorities at the Taraba State University Jalingo Police Division have confirmed they are investigating the incident to gather more details.

Victoria Patrick described the act as inhumane and felt deep sympathy for the abandoned baby. She immediately took the baby to the District Head of Kasuwan Bera, who confirmed the incident in an interview with Rock FM. He assured the public that the baby is now in safe custody and receiving proper care.

The baby's mother, identified as Martha Ben, later confessed that she abandoned the child out of fear of her parents' reaction.

The headmaster of Early Childhood Academy, Ayuba Amos, confirmed that the baby was found near the school's veranda early in the morning. Additionally, an eyewitness, who owns a shop near the school, reported discovering bloodstains at the entrance of her shop when she arrived for work, indicating that the baby might have been born there before being abandoned.

A nurse who examined the baby confirmed that she is in good condition.

The District Head, Barik Augustine Njenmang, urged young women facing unwanted pregnancies to seek help from care homes instead of resorting to abandoning or harming their newborns. He emphasized that such incidents should never happen again and called for increased awareness and support for expectant mothers in distress.
