Taraba Blind Association Urges Swift Action on Disability Commission Bill

The Nigeria Association of the Blind, Taraba State Chapter, has intensified its call for the swift passage of the Taraba State Disability Commission Bill.

 In a strongly worded open letter addressed to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. John Kizito Bonzena, the association expressed its deep concern over the current plight of people with disabilities in Taraba State.

The letter, signed by Comrade Wanderimam Tenyang, Chairman of the association, highlighted the significant challenges faced by this marginalized segment of the population. "Many individuals with disabilities are grappling with unemployment and are compelled to resort to begging on the streets, in places of worship, and even within government offices as a means of survival," the letter stated.

The association emphasized that the establishment of a dedicated Disability Commission is crucial for addressing the multifaceted needs of people with disabilities in Taraba State. 

He said the commission would serve as a vital platform for advocacy and empowerment Championing the rights and promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in all spheres of society.

Skill Development and Employment: Facilitating vocational training programs, job placement services, and entrepreneurship initiatives to empower individuals with disabilities and enhance their economic independence.

 Accessibility and Inclusion: Advocating for and ensuring the accessibility of public spaces, transportation, and government services for people with disabilities.

 Policy Formulation and Implementation: Providing expert input and guidance to the government on policies and programs that effectively address the needs and concerns of people with disabilities.

The association firmly believes that the passage of this vital legislation would not only significantly improve the quality of life for people with disabilities in Taraba State but also contribute to the overall social and economic development of the state. They urged the Speaker and the esteemed members of the State House of Assembly to prioritize the swift passage of the bill and demonstrate their commitment to building an inclusive and equitable society for all citizens.
