Sardauna LGA Selected as Pilot for Livestock Modernization in Nigeria

The Sardauna Local Government Council of Taraba State has been chosen as the pilot site for Nigeria's livestock modernization efforts under the World Bank-backed Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).

 

During a visit to Gembu, Sardauna's administrative headquarters, on Wednesday, the national team cited the region's favorable climate, abundant livestock population, and strong management practices as key factors in its selection.

 

National Project Coordinator, Mallam Sanusi Abubakar, announced the launch of a groundbreaking Compartmentalization and Zoning Strategy aimed at modernizing livestock production in the area.

 

"This strategy will enhance innovation, institutional systems, and conflict mitigation, positioning Sardauna for international livestock trade," Abubakar said.

 

Abubakar also disclosed that five countries have expressed interest in importing Nigerian beef, with Sardauna poised to become a model for livestock production and disease control in the nation.

 

Dr. Maimuna Habib, the lead consultant for the project, outlined plans to establish Sardauna as a Disease-Free Zone. "Each ranch will function as a compartment, with livestock receiving free vaccinations and treatment for two years upon registration," she explained.

 

The project will provide incentives, including modern abattoirs, veterinary hospitals, and access to vaccines and drugs, creating a comprehensive support system for livestock farmers.

 

Animal Health Specialist Dr. Mustapha Mohammed emphasized the project's role in combating Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs), which currently impede Nigeria's livestock trade. "Establishing a disease-free zone in Sardauna will meet international trade standards and attract investments," he said.

 

Local stakeholders welcomed the initiative. Mohammed Umar, Executive Chairman of Sardauna Local Government, pledged full cooperation from ranch owners, while the Wakili of Fulani Mambilla, Ardo Bawa, committed to mobilizing farmers and addressing any concerns.

 

The L-PRES team also visited ranches on the Mambilla Plateau to assess readiness and gather GPS data. Ranch owners expressed satisfaction with the initiative and vowed full support for its implementation.

 

The project is expected to modernize livestock farming, boost the local economy, and open international trade opportunities, positioning Nigeria's livestock sector for transformative growth.
