Lassa Fever Kills 14 in Taraba In Three Months, Fresh Cases In Wukari
Outbreak Taraba State is currently facing a serious health crisis as it confronts an unprecedented outbreak of Lassa fever that has resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives over the past three months.
One health professional has also been confirmed dead as Lassa outbreak reported in Wukari, as the Federal University Teaching Hospital FUTH Wukari has raised alarm over increase reported cases in the last few weeks.
Dr. Kuni Joseph, the Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jalingo, revealed that the situation has worsened significantly, with six of the fatalities occurring within just the last week.
The data indicates that from October 24, 2024, to the present, the state has recorded a total of 84 suspected cases, of which 33 have been confirmed positive.
While nine patients have successfully undergone treatment and been discharged, six individuals remain hospitalized at FMC Jalingo.
The alarming rate of infection has prompted a concerted response from healthcare officials.
Joint meetings involving representatives from FMC Jalingo, the Taraba State Ministry of Health, and the World Health Organization (WHO) have been convened to discuss and implement actionable strategies aimed at curbing the outbreak.
Dr. Joseph emphasized that this surge in cases is unprecedented for Taraba State, underscoring the critical nature of their efforts.
As part of their response, the authorities are focused on mapping out interventions necessary to halt the spread of the virus while ensuring proper care for those already affected.
In light of the outbreak, Dr. Joseph reassured the public that FMC Jalingo is well-resourced to handle Lassa fever cases, stating that there is no need for referrals to other facilities.
However, he stressed the importance of community awareness and vigilance in preventing further infections.
