Demolition: We Gave Shop Owners Six Months Notice - Commissioner

The Commissioner for Rural and Urban Development in Taraba State, Hon. Peter Julius Vau, has affirmed the demolition of illegal shops in Jalingo and its environs.  

According to him, the ministry issued notices to shop owners six months ago, informing them to vacate the spaces. 

He explained that the owners were initially given two months to comply, followed by a reminder and a final top reminder.  

Hon. Vau emphasized that before the demolition exercise, stakeholders were invited for discussions. 

He also assured that none of the goods in the affected shops were tampered with, as the shop owners were advised to move their belongings before the demolition commenced.  

The commissioner stated that the government's objective is to create a conducive and organized environment where businesses operate through the proper channels and proper places. 

He noted that some of the demolished shops were located in unsafe areas, including under high tension wires and around electric poles, which pose risks to public safety.  

He added that such areas often harbor criminal activities, including drug dealings, and serve as meeting points for planning illegal acts. 

To address these issues, the government is implementing a plan to construct corner shops in strategic locations.  

Hon. Vau further disclosed that the ministry is looking to collaborating with the Land and Survey Department to identify government lands for proper utilization.

 He also announced plans to clear illegal motor parks along roadsides to enhance security in the state capital.  

He reiterated the government's commitment to continue the demolition exercise daily to ensure that Jalingo becomes a well organized city.  

Meanwhile, some affected shop owners have expressed concerns over the financial losses they incurred due to the demolition. While some pleaded for more time to remove their belongings, others called for a more considerate approach from the government.
