Addressing Water Scarcity On The Mambilla Plateau

 

Nestled in the heart of nature, the Mambilla Plateau is a true wonder, adorned with stunning scenery, refreshing weather, and a community known for its hospitality. The region thrives in two seasons—rainy and dry—each shaping the landscape in remarkable ways. During the rainy months, the once barren lands come alive, blanketed in lush greenery that transforms the area into a breathtaking haven.  

 

But the story changes drastically during the dry season, which stretches over four long months. This period brings relentless hardship as water becomes a rare and precious commodity. The land turns dry and dusty, forcing residents into daily battles for survival. Many must descend steep valleys to fetch water and endure the grueling trek back uphill, often carrying heavy loads of jerrycans or basins. For others, the only option is to pay exorbitant amounts—up to a thousand naira for just four jerrycans of water—a cost that's simply unsustainable.  

 

This cycle of suffering has turned the dry season into a time of unyielding hardship for the people of the Mambilla Plateau. The truth remains that water is not just essential—it is life itself. Yet, for nearly half the year, this life-sustaining resource feels painfully out of reach.  

 

We earnestly call on the state and federal governments to prioritize addressing this critical issue. Additionally, we appeal to international organizations to step in and help bring relief to the struggling people of Mambilla Plateau especially Gembu 

 

Access to clean water is a basic human right, not a luxury. It's time for us to join hands and end the water crisis on the Mambilla Plateau.
