Taraba To Enforce Consumption Tax on Hotels, Restaurants Others From Dec 1st

The Taraba State Internal Revenue Service (TIRS) will begin enforcing a Consumption Tax on hotels, restaurants, and event centers as of December 1, 2024.

 

 This decision is in line with the amended Approved List for Collection Act, 2015, item No. 10.

The implementation follows a comprehensive awareness campaign and discussions with hotel managers, restaurant owners, and event center operators across the state. The effective start date was agreed upon in a meeting held on October 29, 2024, at the TIRS Headquarters in Jalingo, attended by TIRS management and representatives from the hotel, restaurant, and event center sectors.

Board members Mr. Magai B. Agyo and Mr. Idi A. Ivo clarified that the Consumption Tax is already mandated by the Taxes and Levies Act (Amended, 2015) and is currently collected by other states. They emphasized that Taraba State should not be an exception and called on industry stakeholders to cooperate with TIRS for smooth implementation.

Mr. Joseph A. Durojaye, the State Chairman of the Hotel Managers Association, expressed full support for the initiative on behalf of his members. He encouraged cooperation within the association to ensure the tax's successful implementation and commended TIRS for the prior awareness and sensitization efforts.
