Kefas Promises Public-Private Partnership to Save Mambilla Beverages
Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas has pledged to revitalize the Mambilla Beverages Limited in Kakara, Sardauna Local Government Area, through public-private partnerships.
During a visit to the company, the Governor revealed plans to lead a delegation to Kenya to attract investors and experts to modernize the once-thriving beverage producer. The move is seen as a crucial step to counter the growing competition from newly established tea companies in Nguroje and Maisamari on the Plateau.
Mambilla Beverages, renowned for its Highland and Green tea brands, has faced challenges such as obsolete machinery, encroachment by farmers and herders, and the devastating effects of erosion on its plantations. The company's Managing Director, Mr. Timothy Fanya, highlighted these issues, emphasizing the urgent need for dredging to reclaim silted-up tea plantations.
Governor Kefas expressed deep concern over the erosion problem, attributing it to climate change. To address this, he announced plans to provide the company with new tractors from the state government's stock.
In a bid to diversify its operations, Mambilla Beverages has outlined plans to venture into coffee cultivation and processing, as well as the planting of economic trees.
Prior to his visit to the beverage company, Governor Kefas inspected the Segem Dam and its 400-kilowatt twin turbines, which provide power to the tea factory.
The Governor's tour of the company included a firsthand look at the tea processing and packaging procedures. He concluded his visit by planting a tree as a symbolic gesture of commitment to the company's revitalization.
The state government's intervention is seen as a major boost for the company and the entire region, with hopes that it will create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
