Drugs Abuse On The Rise in Taraba- NDLEA

The Commander, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Taraba State, Mr Nanzing Daniel Sallah has described as alarming, the rate of drugs abuse in Taraba state. 

Mr Sallah who was represented by his Deputy, Ali Obadiah Umar stated this while speaking with our correspondent shortly after an awareness campaign on the dangers of drugs abuse held at Federal Polytechnic Bali, the administrative headquarters of Bali Local Government Area. 

He said the use of illicit and hard drugs is a global challenge, stressing that the good awareness campaign which was targeted at public secondary school principals is aimed at educating them on the negative effects of drugs abuse to enable them identify as well as translate the knowledge acquired to their students to enable them become better people in future. 

The Commander who emphasised the dangers of drugs abuse, however noted that the programme was sponsored and facilitated by the Governor of the state, Dr Agbu Kefas who is worried about the rate of drugs abuse in the state. 

Highlighting varieties of drugs abuse, the commander disclosed that one of the substances that is commonly abused by the people of Taraba state is methamphetamine popularly known as Ice, lamenting that ice which is a new phenomenon is in rampant use because it does not smell. 

Also commenting, the chairman Bali Local Government Council, Aboki Dauda commended the NDLEA for the programme and promised to set up a drugs abuse campaign Committee in the Local Government area as well as ensure that the advocacy is carried out in all the nook and crannies of the Local Government Area including Mosques and Churches. 

The event was attended by security heads in Bali, traditional rulers and all the public school principals in the Central zone.
