Taraba Water Transporters Ban Night Journeys, Overload
To reduce boat mishaps, Taraba State's Association of Inland Water Transporters has banned journeys and overloading at all of the state's jetties.
Alhaji Jidda Mayoreneyo, the acting state chairman of the association, revealed this in an interview at Mayoreneyo .
He stated that overloading and night trips were major causes of boat mishaps and that if avoided, the number of boat accidents would be reduced.
He also stated that rescue operations when boats capsized in the middle of the night were difficult and resulted in more casualties.
He also revealed that the National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA) had provided the association with some life jackets for use by passengers.
He also stated that as part of their efforts to address boat mishaps, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA), and fire service had conducted enlightenment campaigns on safety measures for water transporters in three state zones.
