Fresh Rumples Over Ukwe Takum Stool

• Chamba, Kpanzon Tribes Can't Be Ukwe-  Kuteb Groups

Alleged moves by the Taraba State Governor Acrh. Darius Dickson Ishaku end the over twenty years old dispute on the first class throne of Ukwe Takum is generating a lot of tension in Takum Local Government area.

The Ukwe Takum stool became vacant in 1996 after the death of Ukwe Ali Ibrahim Kuffang II.

The Kuteb Yatso, a pan Kuteb cultural association however  rejected an alleged rotation of the chieftaincy among three tribes in the local government and   installation of a non Kuteb as a new first class monarch for the stool.

Governor Ishaku was alleged to have meet with  Takum elders and stakeholders on 5th November 2022 in Jalingo to discuss a proposed rotation of Ukwe Takum stool among Chamba, Kuteb and Kpanzon.

"We have concluded arrangement to send an executive bill to the Taraba State House of Assembly to make the 1st Class Ukwe stool in Takum to rotate between Chamba, Kuteb and Kpanzon. We will start with the Chamba in this new arrangement. We need your support in the interest of peace, inclusiveness and development. We have secured the support of some key stakeholders from Takum including the elder statesman, General TY Danjuma," was quoted to have said at the meeting.

The National President, Kuteb Yatso of Nigeria Elder Emmanuel Ukwen said the proposal does not reflect the history, culture and tradition of Takum community.

"We reject the proposal of H.E Arc Darius Ishaku on the planned rotation of Ukwe Takum stool among Chamba, Kuteb and Kpanzon, on the ground that it does not reflect the history, culture and tradition of Takum community. "Planning to implement Chamba's agenda to dominate the Jukun people's tradition and culture is very unfair and insulting to Kuteb nation. 'Our expectation was for the governor to set forward the administrative instrument that will enable him to install and inaugurate the New Ukwe Takum which has been vacant for more than 25 years today.

" This is an unfortunate plan but we are calling on His Excellency to heed to the advice of the former Aku Uka of Wukari, Dr Shekarau Angyu Massaibi who had told everyone including him that changing the stool of Ukwe Takum will be an insult to the entire Kwararafa nation. It is a clear abuse of power  and institutionalization of injustice on a traditional institution, a decision that has serious cultural, historical, social and legal consequences."
