DIVINE DIMENSIONS: Untold Story Of How Kefas Agbu Joined Race For PDP’s Guber Ticket
In 2015, Lt Col Agbu kefas (rtd) had finished his Chairmanship tenure at The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA and had turned his gaze towards home in Taraba state and the Governorship race that year. Kefas sojourn in the military too had ended after putting in 20 years and he had retired honourable at the rank of Lt Colonel. Armed with these credentials and fired by a zeal to serve his people, the Government House, Jalingo was his next stop.
The contest was tough as some top level Taraba state politicians were also in the race that year. Power was to shift to the south and the politicians couldn't agree on a consensus candidate to fly the Peoples Democratic Party PDP flag. Invariably, it was up to General TY Danjuma to make the pick as the selection process had failed.
That year, General Danjuma picked the current governor, Arc. Darius Ishaku, to run against the opposition. Kefas in his gentle manner promptly supported Ishaku and threw his weight behind the project. Darius campaigned and won.
For the next years, Kefas was to practically disappear from public life, working silently behind the scene, supporting families and growing his businesses. He invested greatly in the lives of many youths from Taraba State more notably Wukari.
But 2021 was the turnaround year for him politically. Out of almost nowhere and probably to compensate him for his earlier sacrifice to step down his Governorship ambition for Darius Ishaku, Kefas became the state Chairman of the PDP.
Sources close to Kefas said he was accomplished and content with the headship of the ruling party. Though from the day he was elected Chairman of the party, rumours had swirled around that it might be a stepping stone to the Governorship.
Then in 2022, the forms buying episodes started with those interested in the race going to pick forms. Inside sources said Kefas was initially not interested and was even told by the governor not to bother about the contest. The governor was favourably disposed to power shift to the north and already even has a successor in mind, Aminu Kotolo.
But at this point, the governor, who is the ultimate anointer of his own successor, was already disposed to other persons. Kefas wasn't in the equation at all.
Surprisingly, General TY Danjuma at a meeting, wasn't also disposed to Governor Darius's pick and told the governor so. The governor too wasn't satisfied with the person whom General TY Danjuma wanted initially, Barr Damien Dodo SAN. Chief Victor Bala Kona had also insisted that if the PDP ticket is not given to him, Both General TY Danjuma and Governors candidate should not have it, rejected the choice of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Joseph Albasu.
Kefas, who was merely invited to the meeting as a Party Chairman sat quietly and was observing the back and forth exchange.
Suddenly the General turned to him and said "what about Kefas? He would make a great governor." A shocked Kefas was said to be speechless until Governor Darius had to excitedly nudged him saying "accept it. Accept it."
Another big wig, Chief Victor Bala Kona who was at the meeting and had actually also purchased a form also promptly agreed that Taraba needs a younger generation of leaders to move the state forward.
A thoroughly shocked Kefas then accepted. And that was how the Kefas era begun.
