Govt. Propose Law To Regulate Youth Associations in Taraba

Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Prof.) Joseph Albasu Kunini, has advocated that the various youth associations in the state deserve regulatory law to enable them perform their functions effectively and legally.

 

Contributing to a debate on a bill for a law to provide for Taraba State Youth Council and Associations Law, 2021 , the Speaker stated that enactment of such law is under concurrent list of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as Amended).

 

The bill, sponsored by the Executive, seeks to develop in the State a proper youth policy in accordance with the National Youth Policy; to coordinate the activities of the registered youth associations in the State.

 

Other objects of the bill include, to encourage the study and promotion of cultural, physical, mental and social needs of youths by conferences, training courses, exchange visits, social and sporting programmes,  as well as to represent the associations in the State and deal with youth matters at the State and National levels etc.

 

Thus, speaking during debate at a plenary before the passage of the Second Reading of the bill, the Speaker applauded the Executive arm of Government for sponsoring such laudable bill to regulate the activities and  operation of the youth associations in the State.

 

He said, "When a state develops its youths, it is equally developing the future of the nation.

 

"The Bill comes under concurrent list of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as Amended).

 

"I'm in  support of an enabling environment through enactment of law to guide the conduct of the youths and harness their potentials.

 

"In Taraba State, we have vibrant youth associations ; therefore this bill will promote the activities of the youths.

 

"Without legal backing to the youth associations, we will be doing them a great disservice.

 

"The bill, when passed into law will expose the youth through exchange of ideas and promotion of our culture.

 

"However, there will be sanctions for misdeeds or misdemeanors by the youth associations."

 

Earlier, other members who contributed to the debated commended the Executive for sponsoring the bill which they said was timely, just as they unanimously called for its speedy passage into law.
