Wukari peace committee, security agencies meet, discuss lasting peace measures

The Wukari Peace and Reconciliation Dialogue Forum has met with security agencies and other stakeholders have met as part of measures to cement ongoing peace talks in the local government aimed at enthroning normalcy. 

Rising from the meeting, the stakeholders assured that all parties would work assiduously in ensuring peace was achieved in the local government and all warring parties denounce violence and ethnic clashes which had placed the area on a wrong footing in the state. 

Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman, Wukari peace committee, Hon. Angye Josiah Yaro, explained that the committee has been organizing shuttle diplomacy meetings with various stakeholders groups, communities, and religious leaders across board to ensure peace and normalcy return to the area. 

According to him, the BASEI Educational Initiative through the support of NIWANO Peace Foundation has been facilitating mediation and peace building programs in the local government and that all the efforts were beginning to yield desirable results.

Yaro said that between May and June 2020, the committee had facilitated a non-violence approach to conflict resolution in Southern Taraba and constituted some subcommittees that would work together in other to address all pending issues that would bring lasting peace to the area. 

"Capacity building workshop on peacebuilding was organized for the various stakeholders' groups in Atoshi Recreation Center Wukari and subsequently the peace and reconciliation committee of eight members was formed and inaugurated with representation from various tribe, chiefdom, community's, organizations and other stakeholders groups which I am part of to bring a lasting solution to the crisis," the chairman said.  

He, however, enjoined residents across the local government to embrace peace in other to bring more developmental projects to the community.
